    The VIP Preview and Vernissage of the Art Basel Miami Beach drew considerable crowds last night. The co-directors of the fair, Annette Schönholzer and Marc Spiegler, have completely redesigned the interior of the convention center, consolidating many of the sections and making the navigation of the convention center an easier feat. With the uncertainty of the market, galleries opted for a variety of approaches. Many of the blue-chip galleries still went for eye-catching attention pieces, while other galleries created thoughtful, and dare we say, humble installations of less established artists. It proved to be a great mix, surely helped by the inclusion of other fair sectors into the main convention center.

    Among the main galleries, visitors saw the curated exhibits of Art Kabinett, the solo projects of Art Nova, and the emerging artists of Art Positions. The Art Positions section, once located in the shipping containers at Collins Park, is now given central location within the main floor and was one of the major highlights of the convention center.

    The Bass Museum held a reception for the unveiling of Where Do We Go From Here? Selections from La Colección Jumex, one of Mexico’s premier collections. In the past decade, collector Eugenio López has transformed his collection into a destination in Mexico City, highlighting many of Mexico’s top artists and exposing them to the international scene. This exhibition is a curated look at some of the highlights of his collection. In 2011 López will oversee a major step for the collection, the unveiling of a new Jumex space in downtown Mexico City.

    Lastly, the OHWOW space held two events, the 2nd annual It Ain’t Fair (2009) at its usual spot, and the “opening” of New York’s seminal downtown bar Max Fish, recreated for Art Basel in another location. With or without Max Fish, it is safe to say that every year Art Basel Miami feels like New York moved to Miami.
